⚾ Baseball Rules & Player Prop Guide

Overview of baseball rules and player props like hits, strikeouts, and home runs—explaining how each is defined and scored.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

  • Did Not Play (DNP): If a player is not in the starting lineup, any entries involving that player will be marked as DNP, even if they later appear in the game (e.g., as a pinch hitter or reliever).

  • Player Entry Is Action If:

    • Batters: Must be in the starting lineup and record at least one official at-bat (intentional walks do not count).

    • Pitchers: Must be in the starting lineup and complete at least one full inning pitched.

  • Extra Innings: All stats earned in extra innings count toward the final result.

MLB Game Status Rules

  • Canceled / Postponed / Not Started: If the game is canceled, postponed, or never begins, all related props are voided and marked as DNP.

  • Shortened Games: If a game is shortened but deemed official by MLB (e.g., due to weather after 5 innings), stats count, and all props will be scored normally.

    • In a shortened game, our player props are based on the "already determined" rule. If the prop has already been decided (e.g., a player hits a home run before the game is called), the pick stands. If not, or if the outcome could still change, the pick is voided.

  • Suspended Games: If a game is suspended, it will remain open until officially resumed and completed. Final stats from the completed game will apply to entries.

**For the avoidance of doubt, all statistics and outcomes are determined based on official scoring data provided by Major League Baseball (MLB).**

Live (In-Game) Picks – Rules ⚾

Live (In-Game) Picks allow users to enter picks after a game has started using real-time stats and updated projections.

All Live Picks are action-based, meaning outcomes are determined by the player’s performance from the moment the pick is placed through the remainder of the game, subject to the rules below.

How Live Picks Work ⏱️

  • Live Picks use real-time projections and game state at the time of entry

  • Stats accumulated before the pick is placed are included in the projection line

  • Once submitted, all Live Picks are final and cannot be canceled or adjusted

All Picks Are Action ✅

  • All Live Picks are considered action once placed

  • If a player exits the game for any reason (injury, substitution, ejection, managerial decision, etc.), the pick will still stand.

  • Reduced playing time, missed opportunities (e.g., no additional at-bats), or changes in role do not qualify for a void

Example: If a hitter is removed from the game and does not receive another at-bat, the pick still stands based on their final recorded stats.

Non-Starters & Incorrect Market Offerings ⚠️

  • If a player does not start the game, any Live Pick offered on that player is subject to void

  • This includes situations where a player enters later as a substitute (e.g., pinch hitter or defensive replacement)

  • If a Live market is incorrectly offered on a non-starting player, all associated picks will be voided, regardless of outcome

Example: A player does not start but later pinch hits, and a Live Pick was mistakenly offered — all picks on that market will be voided.

Injury & Early Exit Rules 🚑

The standard injury void policy still applies, with the following clarifications:

  • If a player meets the minimum participation threshold, the pick is action and will not be voided, even if they later exit the game

  • If a player does not meet the minimum threshold, the pick may be voided according to standard rules

Minimum Participation Thresholds

  • Hitters: Must record at least 2 official at-bats (ABs). (Intentional walks do not count).

  • Pitchers: Must reach the minimum pitch count of 45 pitches.

Examples 💡

Example 1 (Pick Stands – Injury After Threshold):
A hitter records 2 at-bats and later exits the game due to injury while playing defense.

  • If you selected LESS, and the player remains under the line → Win

  • If you selected MORE, and the player does not exceed the line → Loss
✔ Pick stands because minimum participation was met

Example 2 (Pick Stands – No Additional Opportunity):
A player is substituted out and does not receive another at-bat.
✔ Pick stands based on final recorded stats

Example 3 (Void – Did Not Meet Threshold):
A hitter exits the game before recording 2 at-bats
✔ Pick is voided under standard injury rules

Important Notes ⚠️

  • Live Picks do not guarantee equal opportunity (e.g., future at-bats or innings pitched)

  • All outcomes are based on actual recorded stats at game completion

  • Gameplay is based on available information at the time of entry, including score, inning, and player usage

Final Determination 📊

  • All Live Picks are subject to Payday Fantasy’s official stat sources and grading rules

  • Payday Fantasy reserves the right to settle, adjust, or void picks in accordance with standard gameplay policies

Pitcher Prop Rules

Each pitcher's prop is graded based on individual performance during their outing, using official MLB statistics.

General Rule for Action:

  • The pitcher must start the game and throw at least one pitch.

  • Once a pitch is thrown, all prop categories are action, even if the pitcher is removed early (due to injury, pitch count, or coach decision).

  • If the pitcher does not start the game, the prop will be voided and marked DNP (Did Not Play).

Pitcher Prop Categories:

  • Strikeouts (K):
Total strikeouts recorded by the starting pitcher.
Action if the pitcher starts and throws at least one pitch.

  • Hits Allowed:
Total hits surrendered by the starting pitcher.

Total earned runs given up by the starting pitcher.
Action if the pitcher starts and throws at least one pitch.

  • Runs Allowed

Runs Allowed are credited to the pitcher who allowed each runner to reach base. If a runner scores after the pitcher has been replaced, the run allowed is still charged to the pitcher responsible for putting that runner on base. Runs Allowed includes both earned and unearned runs.
Action if the pitcher starts and throws at least one pitch.

  • Walks Allowed (BB):
Total number of walks issued by the starting pitcher.
Action if the pitcher starts and throws at least one pitch.

  • Outs Recorded:
The total number of outs the starting pitcher records during their appearance. (e.g., 5.2 innings = 17 outs)
Action if the pitcher starts and throws at least one pitch.

Note: All props are based solely on the pitcher’s performance during their outing. Stats recorded after they leave the game are not counted.
